At the Erath County Humane Society, we know that pets can be the perfect complement to our lives, adding joy, love, laughter, and companionship. However, it’s important to make a good match so you and your new addition will be happy together for many years to come. There are several factors that should weigh into your decision, so think things through before making your choice.

Lifestyle and Limitations

For comfort, convenience, and compatibility, it’s important to think through what your lifestyle is like and how a pet will fit into it. For instance, people who are on the go a lot might be most comfortable with a pretty independent pet, such as a cat. On the other hand, if you travel a lot and intend to take your pet along, some dog breeds make better travelers than others. Some exotic pets lend themselves well to apartment-living, but if you jog or have room to run, an athletic dog could be the perfect fit. A kitten or puppy can require more time than an adult pet, learning house rules and restrictions. If anyone in your home has allergies, that can also be a concern. To ensure a good match, contemplate your home and life, such as space, the time you can dedicate, and how much energy you have for your pet.

Prepare for the New Arrival

Whatever pet you decided on, you should also gather appropriate pet supplies. Depending on your selected species, an aquarium, litter box, leash, bowls, crate, and/or bedding might be on your shopping list. Some animals you can purchase food for in advance, although for animals like dogs and cats, you should find out what they are currently eating. Dramatic food changes can lead to digestive issues, so plan to transition gradually or stick with the same food.

Keep in mind that when it comes to house training cats and dogs, accidents are to be expected. Knowing this, be patient with your pet, especially if it’s a rescue. If you keep your pet cordoned off from certain areas, you can eliminate damage to furniture. On the other hand, if you want your pet to have free reign, be prepared to invest in some basic supplies before bringing your new friend home. Cleaning supplies are a must-have, such as products designed to help neutralize stains and odors. You can also look to furniture or carpet cleaners once your animal is fully trained, or possibly even reupholstery services if it comes down to it. If your pet sheds, invest in a vacuum that can stand up to pet hair and dander.

Do Some Pet Proofing

If you’re planning to bring home an animal which will not live inside a cage or tank, such as a dog, cat, ferret, or rabbit, you should pet-proof your home. Eliminate any toxic houseplants and safely store chemicals and cleansers out of reach. Bear in mind that some pets can slink into small spaces, so you might need to make certain areas off-limits, such as the laundry and closets. Also, pick up small things your pet might play with or chew, such as rubber bands, thumb tacks, pens, jewelry, and so forth. Dogs can be particularly interested in trash, so it could be a good time to invest in a dog-proof trash container. Pets that linger in the yard should also have appropriate outdoor accommodations, such as a well-chosen fence and pet-safe plants.

Caring and Sharing

As a new pet owner, you’ll probably be excited about bringing home your new addition, and you should be! However, your pet might need some space at first, so keep the transition as quiet as possible. Animals often need time to adjust to new surroundings, and if your pet came from the Erath County Humane Society, it can take even longer to settle in. On the upside, shelter and rescue pets are typically ready for their new homes in other ways. Rescue organizations often take care of bringing the pet up-to-date on veterinary care and grooming, and your pet might already be familiar with basic house rules. Be patient with your pet, and soon enough, you’ll be the best of friends and set to explore the world together.

When you’re ready to add a companion animal, take your time so you can choose carefully. Think things through to make the transition smooth for you both. Good preparations and a pet that complements your lifestyle are the keys to ensuring you are both happy.
